Episode 30: Seatbelt Laws

To start this off right, I would like to state that 'Yes, I do wear my seatbelt and require my passengers to wear one also'. I do this because I believe that seatbelts are helpful in the prevention of major injuries during frontal accidents (although there is no guarantee). I cannot say that I do this because it helps me become a better driver. Which leads me to the first of many issues I have with the discussion on this episode.

1)I believe there is NO proof that the "inanimate object" called a seatbelt will somehow magically improve the "human skill" called driving. It in no way has the power to improve a person's ability, awareness, responsibility, common sense or even reflex time in the operation of a vehicle. These are all human traits that can only improve with time, education and experience, and not with the implemenation of a seatbelt.

2) The assumption that a person is a danger to society because he or she is not wearing a seatbelt is very profound. I'm not sure about anyone else but I feel pretty offended with this heavy statement. To judge me and my skills as a drvier based on whether or not I'm wearing a seatbelt is very insulting. Besides there is no proof to this assumption and I feel that it is very unfair to make this kind of accusation about the people of NH and their character.

3) The comment about school bus drivers being excellent drivers was a very good comment and I do have to agree. However, my question is in reference to this law: "Are you implying that they are no longer excellent drivers when they get into their own cars?" "Should we lose confidence in them to drive responsibly the moment they step off the bus?"

These were just a few of the many thoughts I had regarding this episode and it's topic. I would like to thank Denis and Lydia for inviting Rep. Pillion to the show. His discussion with you was very educational and enlightening.

CONGRATULAIONS Lydia and your husband on your soon to be newest addition to your family.
